This installation is dedicated to my mother. It is a portrait of her, my three brothers and myself. It was made to honor her unconditional support and undying empathy. It emerged out of my need to celebrate and acknowledge all the racialized and gendered hardships she has survived through, to emerge as one of the most inspirational and radical women I know. The planting of the chrysanthemum in the center of the installation is a tradition borrowed from my yearly Chinese ancestor funerary worship practice and pays homage to my mother’s cultural heritage. The knitted and crocheted backdrop employs techniques and domestic skills that I learned from her at a young age.
